Greetings readers, hope you all had a super week. Parrsboro's Christmas Parade was this past Friday night, and from what I've heard, the entrants and The Parrsboro and District Board of Trade did a formidable job of making this year's parade a success. The rain even let up for a time while the parade snaked through its scheduled route. Hats off to all who participated and to those who organized the event.
Unfortunately, I had to be out of town at the time (work), and even my husband who was armed with the digital camera, couldn't get near the parade (work also).
I have to send out a big: Oopsy, to the readers for my listing of events for the past couple of columns. It would seem that I had November stuck on the brain when dating certain events that, in fact, fall in December. Now how did that happen?
My birthday is in November and I didn't want the month to end so I wouldn't become a year older? I'm really trying to slow down the counting off of the days until Christmas? My calendar doesn't have a month for December?
Do you believe any of that? Hopefully not.
Actually, December is on my calendar and by the time you read this, we will all have flipped over to it. Flippantly so for some; jerkily, for others.
Really, I have no good explanation for my goof-up, outside of, it's just me. If you knew me really well, you'd know that occasionally I get stuck a month or day (sometimes more) behind. You know where your thinking all day that it's Friday and at some point during the day, someone blows your mind and informs you that it's only Thursday. Or Wednesday. Well, that's how I get from time to time with the months. I know, silly right? And, since I'm already airing out my absent-mindedness when it comes to the months of the year, I might as well take it a step further and come clean on what is going to happen at the end of next month.
The year changes. Egad. Look out then. I am notorious for staying stuck back in the previous year by a solid three months. Yup, I'll be filling out the date of the year on every form, cheque, and whatever, as 2009, until at least March of 2010. (One year, I caught myself doing this well into the month of June.)
I would like to thank all the readers, as well as my husband, for pointing out my blip, and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. (Not that I've heard any notion to this; just helpful readers trying to keep me on track.) Thank you readers.
Darn, I just thought that I could have said that my blip was a just a test. You know - to keep you on your toes.
Oh well, maybe next time. (Trust me: there will be a next time, because as I said, I am notorious for this kind of thing. In fact, I could produce a very long list of friends who could back me up on this, if need be.)
Have a great week everyone and welcome to the month of DECEMBER.

For the week of: November 27th, 2009 Is Below:

Greetings readers, hope you all had a wonderful week. Yes, in exactly one month from today, it will be Christmas. You know, someone had to be the first to say it, and it might as well be me greeting you from your morning paper, ha.
Shopping, stringing the lights up, decorating the tree, trying not to "lose it", wrapping gifts; baking batches of cookies and whatever else sounds nice in the recipe book; cleaning the house in the guise of anxiously looking for the address book so you can get all the Christmas cards shoved into the mail; more shopping because you forgot someone on your list (now how did that happen? Oh yes, you've been a bit rushed, Christmas, you know?); last minute shopping means more wrapping and tags (which you forgot while at the store shopping for last minute gifts); popping a couple advil due to migraine; buying the ingredients for the holiday dinner and more snacks, because all the snacks that you did have to serve on platters with a deliciously thick and creamy dip, have now been digested by you in an effort to keep up your strength.
Whew. The list goes on and on. And, perhaps your list doesn't look exactly as mine, but surely you do get the point. It is a busy season. And, there are only thirty days left in which to get it all done. Gotta go, and Merry Christmas everyone.

"Deer Olympics are impressive & no snow yet for November"

Greetings readers, hope you all had a great week. November. The days are slowly inching into colder territory, and a few weeks ago, we actually had a bit of hail. So far though, no snow has fallen in our corner of the world. Not yet, anyway.
October closed out on a very busy day for most folks. Halloween and the first day of hunting. I forgot about the hunting until that evening when I saw an abundance of deer criss-crossing the road all night. They were stirred up. Down my way, it was like the deer Olympics. Deer crossing; deer standing all over the road; deer flying across the road. One lucky buck (so far) sailed across the roadway in front of me at one point. The buck's impressive leap could have put any good reindeer hauling santa's sleigh, to shame. I realized a while later why this buck was in such a hurry. Down around the corner, and about two hundred yards away, were all the females. Apparently, he was looking for them. Hunters have hunting on their minds; the bucks, have something entirely different, on theirs.
Have a great week everyone.
Condolences to the family and friends of Gerald A. "Jerry" Morse and Louise D. Sanford upon the recent passing of your loved ones. Our thought are with you at this difficult time.

Greetings readers, hope you all had a super week. What an incredible turnout of people there were for the Remembrance Day ceremonies in Parrsboro. It was wonderful to see so many come to honour those who have fought, fallen and are in active duty today. Way to go Parrsboro.
That same day, exciting news was heard that the tidal turbine was in the waters, and just off of Cape Split. Jumping into our vehicle with camera and camcorder in hand, my husband and I made the short drive past the Ottawa House and came upon open farm field and, ah, there it was.
What a sight to see: a massive barge with a humongous (and I do mean humongous), barrel-shaped turbine sitting on its platform. The gigantic load was attached to two huge tugboats, and when we arrived, the gravel road at the start of West Bay was filled with onlookers.
Zooming in with the camcorder allowed one to appreciate just how awesome this turbine was. Trailers, people, a vehicle on the barge looked like toys surrounding the turbine.
At the same time, conversing with so many others who came out to see, under the warm sunshine of beautiful day, and standing above a fenced pasture that sloped down to the sparkling blue of the sea, it was still a little hard to take it all in. With our very own eyes, we took in a sight of what we dared not believe, until we saw it for ourselves. The turbine had arrived.
The moments that we spent with people we knew, and some we didn't, but still talking with excitement about the whole event anyway, was all very surreal.
Watching video of the next day, when the turbine disappeared through an opening in the barge and left to sink into the depths of the Bay of Fundy, I felt certain of two things. One, that I would likely never see this particular turbine again in my lifetime. And, two, that history had been made.
I'm glad there were lots of folks around to share that moment with.
Have a great week everyone.
Condolences to the family and friends of Frances M. Laffey. Our thoughts are with you all at this difficult time.

For the week of: November 3rd, 2009 is below:

Greetings readers, hope you all had a great week. In my precision of setting the clocks back, somehow, I managed to forget to flip the calendars over, as well. Huh. One too many things to remember, perhaps. The calenders are flipped over now (thanks to hubby), and we've now set foot into what, surely, will to be a cooler month. Do you recall what happened last year? We had our first snow storm on November 17. Yikes, lets hope it's not so early this year. Like until December 24. Okay, enough about the dreaded white stuff. Out of sight, out of mind, right? Besides, we've just recently cleared All Hollows Eve.
Speaking of Halloween, I must relay a fright that a had on that day. Nothing serious, really. In fact, you'll likely think of it as being on rather the silly side of things. But it did give my heart a start, or a lurch, a skip - maybe. Anyways, I was working (driving cab) and had some groceries to unload from the back of my van for some customers. I wished them a good day, hoped they had a speedy recover from their respective cold and flu, and returned to the back of the van to close the hatch. That's when I heard it. An ungodly noise from out of the blue. I don't know if I had time to shake or not, but I was so frightened and caught off guard by the sound, that my heart felt like it was going pop from my chest.
It was ... moo. And it was a loud moo, too. A herd of cows (or bulls, they all moo so it doesn't really matter what sex they may have been) were standing not twenty feet away from me. One of cows must have thought it would be pretty funny to give out a loud bellow, and on Halloween, to an unsuspecting cab driver just over yonder; instead of being like the rest of the cows and just chewing it's cud. No, this cow was a prankster. And I know exactly which one it was, too. It was brown. And big. Sort of like the rest of the herd. But this one was standing up; close to the fence, its huge, block-like head still raised in the air, and one gigantic eyeball looking in my direction. That was the prankster.
Laughing with my customers upon the folly of a cow, and having the begeebers scared out of me, I commented that it has been a long time since I've heard the mooing of a cow so up close, and personal. I was raised on a small farm, and my grandparents had a huge farm in Economy many years ago, so it's been like twenty years since I've heard a cow moo. Like I said - it's silly. However, on a day that is well-known for scares (heightened by watching too many scary movies on the tube), a person has to be ready to scream, and then laugh it off, at practically the drop of a hat on October 31.
I was scared to death for a few seconds that day, and I imagine the prankster cow and the rest of the herd, had a great laugh for the rest of the day, on my account. Next year, I'll be ready, just in case they try it again.
Hats off to the funny cows, and have a great week everyone.
Condolences to the family and friends of Douglas W. J. Robinson and Joyce H. Knowlton. Our thoughts are with you all, at this difficult time.

"Under the apple trees"
Greetings readers, hope you all had a great week. Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and that you were able to take in the many beautiful sights around Parrsboro.
The apple trees are quite full around the area and I have noticed that a huge branch has come off one of the trees in the orchard, I can see from my window. Mother nature doing her pruning, I quess. I'm sure there will be new growth to see in that particular area next year.
Usually, I see quite an abundance of wildlife at these apple trees, but so far the deer seem to be content in getting their nutrition from the fields.
Speaking of the fields, a few days ago the large field across from our home was loaded, and I mean loaded, with Canada geese. I had family arrive for a visit and my father, having the same idea I did a few years ago, starts off into the field hoping to get a close-up of the striking birds. He got the same results as I did two years ago. If you walk two feet towards these birds, they rather rudely, waddle away from you at about a distance of two feet. You can continue to try to gain some ground, but in reality, the geese keep always you the exact distance away from them, as when you started. My father and I, have found the Canada geese, to be quietly rude.
Have a great week everyone and enjoy the wildlife.
Condolences to the family and friends of Arley W. Canning upon the recent passing of their loved one. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Crystal's Corner for the week of:   November 26th, 2008.
By Crystal J.A. Melanson

Greetings readers, hope you all had a great week. Winter arrived with a fury last week, and what an entry the chilly season made. Snow - lots of snow; power outages; folks fumbling to find flashlights or candles; people trying to get home after being on tricky roads. It was a nasty night and a huge; wake-up call for the season ahead. And I might add, a rather rude one.
Personally, I was doing okay until the lights went out and then stayed out, for the better part of the evening. At first, I honestly thought that I was prepared for whatever the night ahead could turn out. Supper was almost cooked (note: I said, almost cooked). I had most of my groceries put away, and once I found a scented candle (all that I could come up with at the time), I believed that everything was going to be alright… Not!!!
My husband and I went "dashing through the snow" to get to the shed to dig out the Coleman stove and lamp, and of course, we forgot to take a flashlight with us. Something we realized after trying to flick the electrical switch numerous times, and mumbling our disdain at the "not working" switch, a time or two. My husband blindly, fumbled around the shed, searching for the needed items - first a solar light, then a lighter, then finally a cell phone, It did the job & all the while I held open the shed door trying to take advantage of any light that may have been available.
I'd occasionally scoot back into the shed thinking I may be able to help in the search and then scamper back, a few moments later, to hold the door again. I was leery and almost certain, that at some point the wind would be vile enough to smash the door into my face while I was busy with my scooting and scampering. Mercifully, this time, the door didn't get me.
When we made it back to the house and my husband was finally able to pry the front door open, I thought "there, safe and sound" as we stepped into the comfort of a warm house. We finished cooking supper on the Coleman, hung the lantern in a strategic spot as to cast light into two entire rooms, and topped off the wood box. After a nice, hot meal spent lounging by the airtight in the peace and quiet of our home, it suddenly occurred to me, that something was wrong. It was too quiet, but that was after my husband (I'm sure) talked steady, for about an hour. Something you have to understand here is that I'm usually like most folks and can't wait for the power to go out. Memories of childhood when the power went out: playing cards and snacking by the lamplight; enjoying each others company, until the power came back on. I had those.
Last week, I wasn't in the mood for cards or talking. I was tired. I wanted to go to bed and sleep and so, I trekked off to the bedroom to snuggle under a lot of blankets and work at recharging my worn batteries. Everything would have been fine until - eek- no fan. I am so use to falling asleep with the gentle drone of the fan. It was too quiet. As I laid there trying to get sleep to overcome me, I marveled at how ironic it was that as a child I could not sleep without absolute peace and quiet, but now, as an adult, I can't seem to fall asleep with at least some noise. Funny.
The next day, after the power had come back on, I realized a couple of things about myself.   I now, need noise to sleep; I have to be in the mood for a power outage, and a battery-powered fan is now at the top of my wish-list for Christmas.
Have a great week everyone.

Crystal's Corner News for: May 14th, 2009.

Greetings readers, hope you all had a wonderful week. It's that time of the year where everyone finds it very hard to resist the pull of the outdoors. Whether it's walking, visiting the beaches, or sitting on a bench; one thing is clear, we all want to be outside.
No wonder we all get so excited at the prospects of the warmer seasons. You can't sit by a babbling brook and close your eyes, and just let your mind be at rest in the winter. You'd be frozen to the ground. The birds aren't chirping and the trees can't bud. You couldn't go out and sit in your lawn furniture because a) you wouldn't be able to find it, and b) you'd likely be quickly covered over with snow if you spent any amount of time on it.
Nope, spring is the season where everyone seems to come alive. We come out of our burrows and shake off the slumber of a very long winter. We take a few moments to inhale the fragrant, spring air. We gaze in wonderment at the azure sky with the fluffy clouds. At night, we can pick out our favorite constellations among the stars.
Notice the things that you always enjoy during the warmer months of the year, and each year, try to notice more.
Have a great week everyone.

Crystal's Corner News for the week of Oct. 1, 2008.
By Crystal J.A. Melanson

Greetings readers, hope you all had a great week. Thank goodness hurricane Kyle did not leave a path of destruction in our neck of the woods. It was relatively quiet here during the storm, which was sort of surprising considering all the forecasts on the internet and television pertaining to the storm. I was sure that we were likely to see some action and spent the better part of the day preparing for an onslaught. Cleaning up around the yard, making sure all the windows were closed, lots of water in the fridge and the wood box was full just in case. That night- no hurricane of any significance anyway. But that's okay, unless you also happened to buy a couple bags full of food, what I referred to as   "hurricane snacks", along with some movies, and yet, no hurricane. Actually, my snacking was not so much brought on by the prospects of a hurricane as I had already bought the chocolate confections earlier in the day. I had been craving something sweet, namely chocolate, for the past week. Seven days of ignoring the craving, turned me into a raving-chocolate-nut cake by Sunday. I just couldn't resist anymore. I swiped my car into the nearest store, grabbed the biggest chocolate bar that I could find (something I have never done in my life, thinking those huge candy bars are for the real chocolate addicts), and then I drove back home. Everything was under control and going fine, but as I sat in the driver's seat and my slab of chocolate sat in the passenger seat next to me, I just couldn't help myself.   It was tantalizing me really, from its wrapper in the grocery bag. I was wondering what the huge chunk of chocolate might look like, so I peeked, and before I knew it, two squares of absolutely, delicious chocolate were in my mouth. Funny how that happened. If you think that was funny, wait until you read the next part.
So, I get home and my husband is coming down the stairs as I am going up with the "evidence" firmly packed away again in the grocery bag. My husband stops in his tracks on the stairs and just looks down at me. A grin cracks across his face and I can clearly see that he is looking at my lips. No, he's not thinking of smooching or anything, he has spotted the chocolate. I felt like a little girl caught eating her parents stockpile of treats. My husband suggested rather smugly that I should go inside and wash my face. I heatedly retorted back (remember I recently quit smoking) that I didn't have the time today to bake no darn cookies, and that I have been craving something sweet all week and I just couldn't take it anymore.   I had caved in and bought chocolate.
I also told him that I bought him something too: whoppers. Since I haven't had whoppers in years, I thought he could probably share a few of them with me later that night. So I opened the bag before him and I had a handful and then another handful, to which my husband remarked when he went to get his bag of whoppers, "I thought you got these for me?" I did. But I also informed him that they were part of the rest of the cache: if we lost power or worse, we would have our snacks and thus be okay. They were "hurricane snacks" after all. If we were going to be housebound all night, we most certainly had to have enough chocolate to go around. That's why women are just better at preparing for things, we think from all angles.
Have a great week everyone.

Greetings readers, hope you all had a terrific week. Ah, June is finally here and and the Junebugs are back. The first appearance of what I like to refer to as "cockroaches with wings" tends to bring some excitement to each of us. The Junebugs are out, so summer is coming. Yes, and even after the first six or so have been chased down inside of your house, you still don't mind these oversized bugs presence. Really, the novelty of the Junebug doesn't wear of for most of us until that one night, after you've turned in to bed and had one of these "bat-like cockroaches" take flight right in your face. The nostagia and novelty of the Junebug is gone after that. It's funny how you didn't mind the insects bouncing their hard bodies off of your windows all night long because you left the porch light on, and it entertained the cat at the same time. It didn't trouble you when one or two of them, snuck into your house in the few seconds that it took you to open the door. No trouble, scoop up the tresspasser(s) and send it back outside again. No, it's only when you have had that one Junebug who has gotten itself into the house undetected, and has lain in wait for when you were to go to bed. That does it. The Junebugs just aren't fun anymore after one has scared the heck out you by flying and buzzing in your face like a small bat. Enough with the Junebugs, we'll all be saying then.
Condolences to the family and friends of Chris Brown. Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

For the week of: Sept 10th, 2008.
By: Crystal J.A. Melanson

Greetings readers, hope you all had a great week. Looks like September is going to be a rather rainy month, if the beginnings of the month are any indication. Parrsboro was second only to Saint John, New Brunswick in the amount of rainfall that fell when the remnants of Hanna traveled up the Bay of Fundy.
Luckily, I wasn't in the area at the time. As of last Friday, I have been on vacation.   Knowing that there was a storm on the way for the weekend and that I would be leaving shortly, I quickly raided my garden before I left. Four ears of corn; a pound and a half of "purple" string beans (it's okay, they turn green when you cook them); two or three pods of peas and a medium-sized bag, full of spinach and a small squash. Oh yeah, and potatoes, the one thing that really grew in any abundance in my garden this year. I expect that after all the rain that Parrsboro received over the weekend and with the possibility of more on the way within the next week, that what I was able to pick from the garden last week may be the only significant yield I will get. That's the gardening life.
Have a great week everyone.

Greetings readers, hope you all had a great week. Psychic and Spirtual Medium Alan Hatfield was at the legion in Parrsboro on Saturday night. There was nearly a full room of people who came out to the event for a variety of reasons: curiosity, seeking answers, or perhaps to find some closure from a loved one. Whether you believe in "Psychics" or not, if you attended the show, there was likely an instance or two where you kind of scratched your head and thought, "Hmm... How could he possibly know that?"
Personally, I had a sort of "awakening" during the event. I was nervous to say the least, that there were any of a number of souls that have passed from my life who may wish to make an appearance. According to Mr. Hatfield one did, and one that couldn't be more closer to my heart. I won't go into all the details, but in talking with Mr. Hatfield I received assurances of many things I already knew, deep down in my heart. The acknowledgment of these things by a third party, for me, brought me comfort and to be honest with you, after Mr. Hatfield left my side, I was in such a state of "relaxation", the likes of which I haven't felt in a really, really long time.
So, do I believe in Psychics? It's hard to say. Along with words from the "otherside" from my loved one, Mr. Hatfield gave me a month and a
particular day, that will supposedly have signifigance for me.   Guess we'll have to wait to see. The closure I recieved that night, made my
attending the event, a worthy cause.Have a great week everyone.

Greetings readers, hope you all had a great week. Now that we are into the month of August, hopefully, there is still a whole lot of summer left. You have to agree that at least the nights have warmed up enough so that if one was so inclined as to leave the windows up, you are now safe to do so without the threat of a cool breeze blowing in upon your toes. The only worry we may have is that a thunderstorm may roll through during the night, but so far, we've been pretty lucky there too. I'm sure we will see lots of precipiation this month as August tends to be a stormy month with showers and thundering enough to wake even the most sound type of sleeper. We've had some rain, but for the most, the cumulus nimbus clouds that have been sailing along Parrsboro's horizons have just kept sailing right on by. I always remark that on a rainy day or evening, that at least I don't have to water the garden that day and besides that, the plants in the garden seem to like the rain water much better anyway. Crystal's Corner News for the week of:
September 17th, 2008.
By: Crystal J.A. Melanson

Greetings readers, hope you all had a great week. Ah, I'm finally back from vacation and coming back into town a few days ago, was just as exciting for me as it had been a week earlier when I was leaving. It was great to get away from work and the house, but it was oh-so-nice, to get back home again.
We took some company along with us for our vacation this year: the cat and the dog. Finding places that are pet friendly can be a bit of a chore. You'll find that there is a sacrifice you must be willing to make in the level of luxury that will be available to you. You may have to trade-off the hot tubs, Jacuzzi or spa services (all the romantic stuff) in the bringing along of your pet, and you may just have to stay in nice, but non-descript accommodation in the trade-off. For my husband and I, it was a sacrifice that we were sort of willing to make. Our dog, who is like our child, is thirteen years old and to put it frankly, he just may not be around a whole lot longer, so while he's still healthy and somewhat spry, we thought we would like to take him with us. The cat- well, I couldn't just leave him home all alone, so he came too.
Well, it was interesting, and to highlight only a few of the ups and downs of travelling with our pets, I'll short-cut to just a few things that stick out in my mind of the Melanson family vacation: Scrappy (our dog) suffered from a prolonged, bout of flatulence that mysteriously started and ended during the drive to and from our vacation. The cat I felt very sorry for as he was the dog's seating partner. The cat (Gizmo) being a little frightened or perhaps it was from the warm air emitting from his buddy, drew himself in closer to the dog. A time or two I believed that the dog was surely going to sit fairly on top of the cat, but he never did. You may be asking yourself here: Didn't you take a cat carrier? Yes, I did. Trust me, the cat was much better outside of it. The funniest part of the trip I would like to share to you readers, is when I looked back and saw my huge-eyed cat (his eyes are usually that huge) with the dog's contrasting, fluffy tail wrapped, casually around the cat's neck. My cat looked to be sporting a fur stole. It was hilarious to see my tough little tom playing dress-up.
Besides that travelling, my pets made out pretty good. They settled themselves in to a new place in a matter of hours; both finding their most comfortable spots. The cat, after giving up hiding under the beds and tucking himself in under the blankets on the bed, would later find that sprawling on large footstool next to a window was the cat's meow. Yes, my cat tucks himself in, he crawls under the end of a blanketed bed and then pokes his head out the top or if he's lazy, you will just find a lump part way down the bed that shouldn't be there, that would be him. For dog, he went anywhere that he pretty much wanted and in speaking of the dog, this vacation was my husband's and mine, first time acquaintance with the fine art of "pooper scooping", and that's about all that I will say on that matter.
The good times for us unlimited. We fawned over our pets when we arrived back at the cottage from a long day of excursions, and the pets seemed pretty happy to see us too, especially when we topped off their food dishes and rang their treat bags. We walked the dog to the beach several times and let me tell ya, this dog likes nothing better than to be outside with both my husband and I along. The cat was still able to be up to his old tricks, he found the location of his treat bags and covertly knocked them off the shelf in the middle of the night a time or two, knowing he would either be able to gnaw his way through to the goodies or that he would awaken me and that I would crawl out of bed and shake a few out of the bag for him.
My husband and I remarked on our drive back home nine days later with the gassy dog and clingy cat in the back seat, that it was nice to be able to take the pets along on a vacation with us. They weren't too much trouble and it was nice to have the memories with them. In the same breath we also acknowledged that now that we've "been there, done that" that our next vacation will be pet-free. Sorry animals, but the next vacation is our alone.
Have a great week everyone.

Greetings readers,
I hope you all had a great week. With the students going back to classes this week, it seems as if there has been another leaf, turned over at the same time. Fall. The temperatures seemed to have dropped considerably over the past week and it may soon be time to fire up the wood stoves and furnaces, if you haven't already done so.The long weekend and Labour Day's weather were not very nice here in Parrsboro. Hale and heavy rains; strong winds bending the trees and knocking a few apples from their branches; lighting- what can I say about that, it was pretty awesome or scary depending upon your view. I have noticed the Canada geese are practicing their "V" formations in small groupings and likely they will be off soon, on their trek back to the south before the end of the month. There are still quite a few hummingbirds at the feeders and I must say that it has been an especially great year to have had so many around. The fall season seems to me to be a lot like spring- a mixture of just about everything.Have a great week everyone.Upcoming Events for September:Bridge by the Sea Final Games at the Ottawa House Museum on Thurs. Greetings readers, hope you all had a great week. The next few weeks will likely fly past us in a flurry or perhaps, just a blur. Students will be heading back to school and what looks like a "bumper crop" of blueberries, are now being scooped and hauled away by the truckload. There are also the vegetable gardens, that are now offering up some of their early best, at this time of the year. Books, berries and strings beans are just some of the things on folks' minds. Turning over the leaves of September can be nostalgic because in saying good-bye to a season where most of us can get out and enjoy the outdoors: barbeques, bonfires, friends and family, swimming, lazing in the sun, planting flowers and watching them bloom, and the list goes on and on, all these wonedrful things we enjoy over the course of the summer months will soon be coming to an end. I can tell you though, that the fall season looks as if it is shaping up to being a wonderful one too. Those lushly-leaved trees of maple, birch and oak are undoubtedly going to be spectacular in their changing of colors in month or so, and what a great addition to those who have backyard composters at home. The corn will be ready to be picked off of their stalks. Winter squash and those delicious brown, red or blue potatoes that have been growing underneath the earth for months, will soon become welcome additions to home-cooked meals, alongside of the pickles and jams of course, that have been hard labored over as well. Taking a walk or drive around Parrsboro offers many fantastic sights in autumn: Canada geese are congregating in their flocks and will likely depart within the next six weeks or so, and the deer and their adorable spotted fawns are busy munching away their days in many an open field, preparing for the winter ahead. With all these wonderous things to behold in the fall and in Parrsboro, who could help being part of the "welcoming party" of fall.Have a great week everyone and here's looking to a great fall season.Condolences to the family and friends of Douglas E. Greetings readers, hope you all had a terrific week. Looks like winter is still here and there seems to be no shortage of snow either. It also looks like it's going to be a long and very snowy go, until spring. Even so, there are no shortages of finding things to do at this time of year. Whether it be to attend a movie night at the band hall, the Heritage and Flag Day ceremonies that are being held at the legion during the middle of this month, dances and musical entertainments or sometimes you can rely on the unexpected. Just such a case of the unexpected happened Sunday and if you were at the right place at the right time, you would have seen it. What am I talking about you ask? I'm talking about a seal, a rather large and distinguished seal that had made its way to the side of the road in the Lakelands area and well, looked like a... beached seal. This part I have only seen from pictures, the part I did see was when the seal was being released at First beach. The care the Department of Fisheries, staff of the RCMP and a farmer took to give this awesome creature back its sea legs was exemplary. Being wrapped up in a tarp for a short time, I thought the seal may not be in such a great mood when it was time for it to swim back into the ocean. But I have to tell you that when the tarp came off and us onlookers got our first look at the huge fellow (not sure if it was female or male) there was a heart-warming "Awe" that went through the small crowd. It was cute. It had a black coat with a marbling effect of lighter colors running through. It was astoundingly beautiful. There was no problem getting the creature back to the water; the farmer that had transported the seal, brought his tractor right down to the waters edge and off the seal went without a moment’s hesitation. Back to its freedom and very likely a better chance at survival, the seal could not have given a better show of its appreciation than it did by happily and strongly swimming back out to sea.
Have a super week everyone.
Condolences to the family and friends of Doris E. Ward. Our thoughts are with you all at this difficult time.

By Crystal J.A. Melanson

Greetings readers, hope you all had a great week. Even though we have been seeing a lot of precipitation lately in the form of snow and rain, most people are hopeful that spring will arrive on schedule. That schedule, is only now, nine days away. Wouldn't it be so nice if it did arrive on time? Yes, I can see it now, daffodils and lilies popping their heads out of the ground just in time for Easter. Let's keep our fingers crossed on that one, though. Last year, not to burst your bubble, we had a massive snowstorm Easter morning. Remember that? It's true. We had fifteen to twenty centimeters overnight, which made getting to Easter services and dinners a little hectic. Hopefully, we won't see a repeat of that this year, as the winter season seems to have been too long already, for most of us. I have to add a note of good measure hear: the Canada geese are back. My husband and I saw them fly in, on this past Saturday, so maybe that is a good sign.
Have a great week everyone.

Crystal's Corner News for the week of Mar, 26, 2008.
By Crystal J.A. Melanson

Greetings readers, hope you all had a lovely Easter. Since it has been somewhat frosty and chilly still, there hasn't been much of a chance of spotting any early crocuses or daffodils snuggled in amongst the homes. Though in speaking with a lady from Diligent River last week, she informed me that she indeed had some daffodils on the back-side of her house; where the sun is able to warm the soil, and that the "early bloomers" were now up to between three or four inches. Good for her. Do you know where I planted my daffodils over three years ago? Directly in the shade. Yup. No wonder I never see them until the end of May or early in June. Since I am a new "green thumb", I will readily admit my mistakes to anyone. There have been many a time that I have done, the exact opposite to doing what I should have; when it comes to planting flowers. You see it is all a matter of timing. Where is the sun for the majority of the day in relation to each of your flowerbeds? That's the question one should ask oneself, if one ever has the hope of having beautiful flowerbeds that, one, can one day, enjoy. My folly has always been that if the sun is shining its beautiful rays on a selected area in my yard at say- four in the afternoon and that the plant I wish to, put to earth, at that moment requires "full sun", that's were it gets planted at four o'clock in the afternoon. Because the sun was beaming down in that particular area whilst I was planting, that's were "she" goes. The mistake is, that of course the next day and for those to follow, that poor plant will not feel the sun's rays all the mornings through. Full shade, partial shade, full shade; those instructions that come with your plant either on a little tab inserted into the soil or printed on the package of a bag of bulbs, cannot be ignored. You just won't get the results you so desire. With my green thumb now twitching, I'm thinking that my first order of business this spring, when the soil finally warms up, may be to transplant any "survivors" to a areas that are more to their liking.
Have a great week everyone.

Crystal's Corner News for the week of April 6th, 2008.
By Crystal J.A. Melanson

Greetings readers, hope you all had a lovely week. Seems there are a lot of folks and little ones around who are sick with the flu. Hope you are all feeling better soon. At least on the plus side, you aren't really missing anything, on the outside, if you are cooped-up in the house. Spring, hasn't really made an appearance yet. It's still cold out; there is still a lot of snow lying around in parts, and it still doesn't seem to want to stop falling from the sky. The nights and many a day, are still pretty cold. So if you're one of the sick, don't despair. Take your time to get better.
This week, two new laws came into effect in Nova Scotia. No handling cellular phones while driving, and no smoking in vehicles where children under the age of nineteen are present. Something to keep in mind and something to get used to in the coming days. Last week, my husband and I equipped ourselves with the newest " Blue Tooth" technology for our cell phones which we use while we are working. Getting used to it, may take a little time. The thing hangs on your ear and even though they are small; they still seem to stick out like a "sore thumb". It catches one a little of guard when you forget it is there and want to swat it off a time or two, only because you're not used to something hanging off the side of your head. If I don't manage to lose this attachment, in the coming weeks, that will be a miracle in and of itself. This device, which has now become a part of my everyday life, with a blue, strobing light that stays on, for quite sometime after I have made or received a call, that blue, strobing light, may in fact, be the very thing to drive me looney. Especially in the dark. The flashing light that is being broadcast from the side of your head, you may find a bit distracting, as well as, irritating. I can't wait to see passing motorists travelling enroute at night. We will all surely look as though we have trapped Fireflies (Junebugs) in our vehicles and that they have attched themselves to our heads. There is a small button on these devices which you have to depress to receive calls, not an easy feat when one is getting used to this contaptions. If you don't wind up sticking your finger in your ear, behind your ear or maybe in your eye if you are really distracted, half a dozen times before your caller hangs up on you; you may be one of the few who catches on to some of this new technology a little bit better than the rest of us. Don't get me wrong, I think anything that eases the distractions that motorists face while motoring, is a good thing. It's just that sometimes, by introducing new technology, perhaps it should have been "suggested" that most folks should have had these little devices a few weeks or months ago, to--   you know, practice. They take a bit of getting used to. Those of us who have to wear them while driving, will not only be getting strange stares in the coming weeks, but you may also get a new nickname or two. Something "star-treky" like my first one-- Seven of Nine (thanks Scoot). If you aren't referred to as some type of Cyborg or other Star Trek character in the coming weeks, consider yourself lucky.
Have a great week everyone.

"An update on Gizmo the whacky cat"
Crystal's Corner News for the week of April 30th, 2008.
By: Crystal J.A. Melanson
Greetings readers, hope you all had a terrific week. I didn't get my column in last week, you may have noticed. The reason was, that I was just plain exhausted. I was so tired last Monday morning, that I could have gone to sleep while standing up, just as my cat has done of recent, because of his long hours spent bird-watching.
That reminds me, thank you to Mr. D. E. of Springhill for your phone call in relation to my wacky cat. A little update for you and any others who may have gotten a chuckle a few weeks ago concerning Gizmo. Gizmo, my two-year old male tabby has been a little obsessive this year in watching our feathered friends through the patio door. He actually goes on guard before the sun comes up and he will not leave his station until he is exhausted. My husband and I observed him about a month ago as he slowly started to nod off while still standing. It was hilarious.
Lately though, he just crashes on one of the chairs at the kitchen table because he is up everyday, before the sun even rises. If my cat, was an employee at McDonald's, he would win the "Employee of Month" award every month. He is on his feet before his shift starts; he's alert, like a kitty on too much catnip; he never takes a break until his work day is through (when he finally crashes); you always know exactly where he is at all times (patio door or crashed on a chair), and he'll give you positive feedback on how well he enjoys his job (the strange teeth chattering, tail swishing and guttural mewing sounds that he does, as though he was eating something- like a yummy bird). But even when Gizmo does finally "crash", if you could see him, you'd notice that he still manages to lift an eyelid now and then, so he can keep watch on the bird feeder.
A few weeks ago, in the middle of the night, the cat was fervently watching the door, which I thought was rather strange as the birds weren't even up yet, at that time in the morning. I flicked on the outside light and what did I see pointing in my direction? A big, furry butt.
Well, a biggy, furry raccoon butt. A clever raccoon had found that by tottering itself on its hindlegs off of the railing of my patio, it was then able to reach out it with its front paws just enough, to pull the bird feeder to its face, and chow down. I didn't know raccoons ate birdseed and that they would consider my patio to be the "drive through" or "express lane" for nocturnal diners. I guess that fully explains the stripes on the little thieves tales. Ha. So I now bring the feeder in at nights because this particular bandit will drain the whole thing in just a few hours if given the opportunity. Since I've done that, "Stripes' has thanked me by now directing his full attention to the backyard composter and by the looks of all the scattered scraps of debris he leaves littered around the lawn every morning, he's having a party.
Have a great spring everyone.
Condolences to the family and friends Margaret Ellen Forrest and Brooklynn Grace Spencer. Our thoughts are with you at this time.

Crystal's Corner for the week of November 21st, 2008.
By Crystal J.A. Melanson

Greetings readers, hope you all had a great week. There was a good turnout of people, of all ages, for Remembrance Day ceremonies held in Parrsboro at the Cenitaph and at the Royal Canadian Legion. From small towns to huge cities, Remembrance Day, every year, is a day for remembering those who have fought, and for those who are in conflict and peacekeeping duties today, who are the keeper's our free country.
Now, Christmas is quickly on its way. Tree lighting, Christmas parade, concerts and parties, shopping; who can ever forget the dizzing days of shopping? From now, until December twenty- fourth, most people will likely swear the clocks have sped up, and that the days have mysteriously become shorter. There never seems to be enough time to get everything done by Christmas Eve. I for one, brought all the boxes in from the shed that contain all the decorations for the season, well over a week ago, and piled them into a spare room. Have I started to unpack them all yet? No. Well, with the exception of one box. That box contains a fiber-optic snowman that we have had for a number of years, but it is one of our favorite decorations, so I couldn't leave this sparkling, cheery guy in his box. Nostalgia, called for him to be unpacked immediately. The rest of the boxes are still waiting in the spare room until the "Spirit of Christmas" strikes me. Typical for me. I did however, have the foresight a few weeks ago, to move the Christmas cactus nearer to a window where it could get the best sunlight of the day. This I did right after Thanksgiving, and now, a month later, I see that it has many small buds starting at the ends of its succulent leaves. Yay, a decoration that will be ready and in place for the holidays, and all I had to do was move it onto another shelf and give it a bit more water. That's decorating.
Have a great week everyone.
Condolences to the family and friends of Ronald J. "Sharkey" Ward upon the recent passing of your loved ones. Our thought are with you at this difficult time.

Greetings readers, hope you all had a great week. Santa came. To me. Remember last week I was a bit worried after my little rant out in the door yard after the hood of my car "thunked" down on my head? Well, Santa came nevertheless. I guess he must have been very understanding of my situation at the time, and let that one slide by. I'll try to watch my language a bit better in the coming year. Maybe it will be one of my New Year's resolutions.
Some comfort to me, was that I wasn't the only one around getting attacked by movable parts of vehicles in recent weeks. A facebook friend of mine, informed me that she had her head banged upon by none other than - her trunk. See, I'm not alone. Weird things happen to other people, too.
With a sore head, I made it through the holidays much the same as anyone else. I had my Christmas dinner - turkey. Way too much turkey. Turkey for four days straight, is quite enough. In fact, last night I broke down and had to cook something different. A home-made poutine sort-of-thing, in which I still had to incorporate a pint or so of left-over turkey-dinner gravy. Sheesh. Every year, it seems to take a week or so, to get rid of all the leftovers from the Christmas dinner. And I'm pretty sure that I have a bowl of carrots hanging on, in the fridge somewhere.
I'm hoping all the readers had a wonderful Christmas and best wishes for you all, in the New Year.
Condolences to the family and friends of Keith C. "Timer" Langille. Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

February 25th, 2009.. Is just below...
Please Enjoy!!!

Greetings readers, hope you all had a wonderful week. This morning, while preparing for my column, I found myself mulling over a few things that will be taking place over the next couple of weeks. Firstly, that March, will be here after this coming weekend. For me, I usually consider this to be the final month of the winter season. Sure, I know we can still get snow right into May, but I'm really hoping that won't happen this year. Who needs that, eh? Secondly, March is just a very long month. Thirty-one days to be exact, and after a month of only twenty-eight, it makes the coming one a little harder to take. Thirty-one days, sheesh. Wouldn't it be nice if we could move those three extra, wintry days to another month? Like maybe December. I don't think we'd hear anyone complaining about an extended Christmas vacation, now would we?
It's not all bad though, because amongst the numerically long month of March, there is one shining light to be found, and it's right there on your calendar. It clearly states that on Friday, March 20 we will be having the first day of spring. Aha.
However, before you become too excited about the prospects of the coming season change and your brain fills up with many of the wonderful thoughts of colorful and lovely scented flowers and the arrival of the various bird species, I first have to burst your bubble. Daylight Saving Time begins. Yup, that means the clocks go ahead and we lose that hour we gained in the fall. I repeat: we lose an hour.
To some people, that may not mean much. What's an hour, right? Well, it's great in the fall because that extra hour means an hour later you can spend: reading, watching television, or it's just an hour later before you have to go in to work. But when you lose that hour, if you're like me, you'll be searching endlessly for two months, trying to gain it back. You may find yourself more tired - blame it on that hour you lost on March eighth. You can't finish that chapter you're reading in a great book - it's that missing hour's fault. You sleep in for your job - it's that darn hour. So, if you're like me and find yourself with nerves on end while chasing that elusive hour, just blame everything on it that goes wrong in the months ahead.
So, there you have it. March has a few things to look forward to, and some not-so-nice-things that we just have to put up with anyway.
Have a great week everyone.

Greetings readers, hope you all had a wonderful week.
Super Bowl XLIII and Wiarton Willie, are two huge events to start our way into the month of February 2009. Depending on your outlook of things; if the team you were rooting for won or not, or if you prefer a longer winter season as opposed to a shorter one, you were either pleased by the outcomes, or not. In reference to the Super Bowl, it's the half-time show and the funny or sentimental commercials that I go for. Oh yeah, and the imbuing of snacks (otherwise known as: stuffing-one's-self-full-of-snacks-until-you-almost-drop or, until the someone finally wins the Super Bowl, whichever comes first). When it comes to the celebrating in the excitement and hoopla of the Super Bowl, I'm guessing we all have our own way of enjoying it; some of them are healthy, and some of them will may make you comatose.
Wiarton Willie, Shebenacadie Sam, and Puxsutawney Phil, are all in agreement this year in their forecasts: there will be six more weeks of winter. As I mentioned above, depending upon your like or dislike for the winter season, the prediction will either please you, or not. Thinking back to November, when we saw our first significant snow storm, I was hoping that maybe the groundhogs would have been able to set a first time record, like: winter's over, now. Wouldn't that be nice.
Since that didn't happen, I guess we'll all have to hunker down and find things to do or fly south, in an effort to beat the winter blahs, and prevent ourselves from going "shack wacky". It's no wonder we are all so happy when spring finally does arrives. We get back that, "spring" in our steps, when the weather is so much more agreeable.
Have a great week everyone, and here's to hoping that the groundhogs were wrong, this year.

Crystal's Corner News for the week of Mar. 11, 2009.
By Crystal J.A. Melanson

Greetings readers, hope you all had a terrific week. Only two more days and March Break will be here. Whether you are staying close to home or travelling afar, a break of any kind, after the winter we've had is surely a great thing to look forward to. I don't know about you, but this past Saturday morning when the sun came out in all of its warmth and glory; I for one, could start to feel the promise of spring being just around the corner. Maybe, it's just a state of mind; but in my opinion, the brightness of the sun is a definite asset to making things look a whole lot better. Shine on, sun.
March is a good time to start thinking about a wonderful pastime many of us enjoy: gardening.
Perhaps, this year will be your first, or maybe you're already a well-seasoned green thumb; whichever is the case, now is the time to set your imagination free. Whether it be flowers, vegetables, herbs, or just adding in a few shrubs or trees to your yard; gardening of any kind, can bring priceless pleasure to your senses, all the year through. Break out the pots; hitch onto a bag of soil; dig through the packets of seeds that have been anxiously awaiting to be planted, and have yourself one heck of a planting party to get you started for the growing season ahead.
Oh yeah, and don't forget to stop and admire a daffodil or two along the way; surely, they will be poking their heads up very soon.

-- The coluumn for the week of:
March 18th, 2009.. Is just below...
Please Enjoy!!!

Greetings readers, hope you all had a great week. March Break; St. Patrick's Day; first day of spring, and lots of birthdays, are just some of the wonderful things about the month of March. One other thing is that we can feel and smell that spring is definitely in the air. Every day is a little bit brighter (in part due to the time change) and the sun, is certainly much warmer. Spring is on its way.
I missed pre-wishing everyone a Happy St. Patrick's Day and wish to do so now. I was looking on the computer for an Irish Blessing that perhaps not many folks have heard of before, however, since I am partly Irish (and Scottish) and have heard many of them over the years myself in childhood and times since, it makes it hard for me to discern of one that you, the readers, may not of heard. Instead, I decided on some of the funny phrases that I was reading through, and would like to pass them on to you in the spirit of St. Patrick's Day, which was yesterday.
The Irish gave the bagpipes to the Scotts as a joke, but they haven't seen the joke yet. Every St. Patrick's Day every Irishman goes out to find another Irishman to give a speech to. And then there's: My mother's menu consisted of two choices: Take it or leave it.
The last phrase, I think most of us in our thirties and above, know only too well. I remember a few times staring down into a detested bowl of soup (for someone reason I absolutely hated home-made soup back then) hoping to be given some kind of reprieve. My older brother seemed to like it alright and in my young mind, I thought: Let him eat it. He seems to like it rather well. I'll have something else...like Kraft dinner or French fries. My pleas never got me anywhere of course, and so one day, bit by bit, I spooned away at my awful bowl of home-made soup, and by the time my bowl sat empty, I found that I like it rather well. A parent's persistence can be so much stronger than a child's.
One thing about Irish blessings, saying, and proverbs, or like the funny phrases that I included here: they warm your heart, they can uplift your mood, and they always speak of common sense. Good things to pass along.
Have a great week everyone.

Crystal's Corner News for April 1, 2009.
By Crystal J.A. Melanson

Greetings readers, hope you all had a great week. It has been a very long winter and according to all of our calendars, it is supposed to be over. However, as we all know, the transition from winter to spring can either wind up being a short one, or a rather long and dragging one. I'm guessing that most of us are hoping that it will not drag on for much longer.
Sunday turned out to be a nice and spring-like kind of day, after the fog finally moved along. Monday, was not so pleasant with rain, snow, ice pellets, and a whipping wind to whirl the whole mess around in our faces. I guess we'll just have to go along with the ups and the downs of spring for awhile longer, and perhaps keep a winter coat and a spring jacket hanging by the door, depending on the weather for any day.
The cold and flu season made for a particularily long winter, too. And to be honest with you, I can't recall there being any kind of a reprieve from the dreaded season. It seems there were always lots of "bugs' around to catch and then pass along to others. Something, that with most of the "bugs" could be done with the utmost of ease. The last cold that was travelling around, if you were one of the unlucky such as myself, you would know that you really needed keep a box of tissues close at hand, at all times, because your nose just would not stop running. Just in case that virus is still making its rounds, you may want to barrel around anyone you see with watery eyes, who is sniffling, and has a pink nose. They've got it.
Since it is spring, I'm sure that the readers have noticed some of the many wonderful signs of spring that have been unfolding here in Parrsboro over the past couple of weeks. The deer can be seen in greater abundance along our roadways and in the clearing fields; the robins, and I've heard the bluejays, are back. The Canada geese are coming in for landings daily, and the smaller birds are hopping around waiting for us to hang our feeders outside. It is so nice to come out of the house in the morning or crack a window and hear their peaceful singing.
Another surprising sign of spring and one that is not in my world a very pleasant one, seems to have begun as well. Skunks, are on the move again. I brushed over one in the wee hours of the morn last weekend and when my fellow passenger gave off a sigh of relief, I burst his bubble and remarked, "Just wait two seconds. You'll be smelling it." And sure enough, as I never get away lucky with these smelly critters, the aroma filled the car. Several washings and days later, the smell is still there. I use to run into this problem with my dog, Scrappy, as he would find it being of some sort of fun to nose around the skunks in his curiousity and would therefore return to my husband or I, smelling of something that I cannot write the words for here, with his tail wagging away. These days, it's my poor car, the one that I am always driving, that seems to always have the bad luck of skunk run-ins or brush-overs from spring to fall, on a yearly basis. My husband, so far, seems to be immune.
So, beware of the skunks, they are out. And also be wary if you're reading this column on Wednesday, because today is, April Fool's Day. You can thank me for the warning in case you forgot.
Have a great week everyone.
Condolences to the family and friends of John W. Coombes. Our thoughts are with you at this time.

Crystal's Corner News as of : August 7th, 2009.

Greetings readers, hope you all had a lovely week. August is here, and Mother Nature seems to be being a little kinder to us. Last week, we had so many sunny days that to be honest, I lost count. Wow. I guess summer has started.
August is typically a busy season for those in the agriculture industry: blueberry harvesters and the gardeners. Folks have already been pulling from their gardens, orange gems of carrots, and beans and peas. Bunches of raspberries are hanging off the vines, and if you don't have any in your area, the local stores and markets are overflowing with these short-seasoned, and refreshing fruit.
Mmmm, raspberries. I spied a few boxes sitting on a counter in a store a few days ago, and I knew before I got to that counter, I knew I was going to have to buy a box. Not because my mouth was watering for the taste of a good 'ol raspberry, it was nostalgia that made me make the purchase.
In my younger days, one set of my grandparents had a huge farm in Economy, and on that farm and among the many crops that they planted and animals that they raised, there was a quarter of an acre of tall canes of raspberries. The raspberries were so sweet, they'd make a child almost forget about the sugary-delights of any candy that could be found in a corner store. The raspberries were really good.
The plot of berries ran across the backside of the house and a huge barn, and I remember summer after summer, wandering through those canes, picking the dewy berries gently from their branches, and gingerly depositing them into a box. The best part of all for me, was in walking around, under, and through those densely-planted canes in the summer and never knowing who you would come across on any given day, besides the fact, that they were family. Around one corner would be my Irish grandmother smiling over at me, and perhaps, she'd be laughing over a smattering of red berry juice that had run down my chin. My mom would be diligently picking away in another part of the field, and chewing on a few of her raspberries as her hands still worked away. And, in another area, I'd find my uncle, nicknamed "super-worker", with six boxes of picked raspberries at his feet and one in his hands that was almost full.
So you see, it was not the taste or nutritional value of the raspberry that made me buy a box the other day when I walked into the store. I soon realized, that they didn't taste the same. They were good, but not in the way that I remembered them. It was the wonderful memories of picking similar berries with my family, the time we spent together wandering amongst the canes, many summers ago, that made the berries much sweeter for me.
Have a great week everyone.

There are many events planned in the coming weeks in the Parrsboro area to celebrate the fall season and Halloween, and if the weather stays as mild as it has been, most of us will not have to bundle up too much to take part in the fun.

As of: September 24th, 2009.

Greetings readers, hope you all had a super week. Fall is now officially here. If you haven't noticed, it arrived yesterday. And what a lovely fall we're having. The air is crisp, for sure, but the sun is still warming things up once it comes out. Maybe it's just me, but it seems as though we've been having more sunny days since summer has gone. Huh. Oh well, we'll soak up the rays no matter what time of the year it is.
This may be good news for those who have to start taking a vitamin D supplement for the winter months. You may be able to put off that regimen for a few more weeks. Right now if you go out in the sunshine for at least twenty minutes during the day, you will likely get all the vitamin D you need, and a sunburn to boot.
Personally, I take the vitamin all year through. You may recall, a few years ago, and during this season, that I fondly spoke of the bears soon going into hibernation for the winter. I may have went on about it enough that I'm sure some people could have believed that I was hibernating with them too. Winter just drags me out. I turn into a sloth. When the sun goes down, I just want to curl under the covers of my bed and sleep, and sleep. So, after hearing enough about the vitamin (television, magazines, etc.) I thought, what the heck, give it a try. And sure enough, I must have been lacking it because I've never had a winter like that since. I don't turn into a sloth. And hibernating with the bears, is the last place that I want to be. Sorry bears, no offence.
Bottom line: we all have to find what works for us, but I just thought I'd throw in my own personal note in case any of you find yourself "winding down" a little too much, at this time of the year. You may want to have it looked into, especially before daylight savings time ends, which is Novemeber 1. That one throws us all for a loop.
Have a great week everyone.
Condolences to the family and friends of Andrew P. "Who" George and Bernard D. "String" Spence. Our thoughts are with you.

For the week of: October 22nd, 2009 is below:

Greetings readers, hope you all had a wonderful week. There are still a few flocks of Canada geese around, perhaps that is a good sign that winter may not be as close as we think.
I'd thought they had all flown south for the winter, but this past Sunday, I noticed that there are still some congregating in the field across from my house. I would have wandered over for a few snaps off the old camera, but when it comes to Canada geese and the ability to get a good close-up shot of their grandeur, I've learned that you may as well forget it. They are a little camera shy or, perhaps I should say - human shy. They don't like you getting too close.
From my experience, if you you walk toward them, say, at a distance of three feet, they will in turn, walk exactly three feet away from you. Try not to be noticable, they still notice you. I've tried everything, outside of dressing up like one, to get close enough for a good shot. Alas, nothing seems to work. So, unless you have a super zoom on your camera (which I don't), you won't get much of a close-up with these birds.
Some beauty is only to behold from afar.
Have a great week everyone.

Greetings readers, hope you all had a great week and are having some of the happiest of holidays. Now that the rush is over, isn't it nice to just relax now? I'll answer that: yes. All the scampering about, through good and bad weather, makes those moments of relaxation and the enjoyment of family and friends, all the more sweeter. You probably wouldn't believe that such a sentiment would be coming from the likes of me, if you also knew just what kind of a morning I started my feet off on. So, I'll tell you. It was this Monday morning past, and after a nasty night of snowfall and howling, high winds, I finally, dragged my sorry self from my warm, snuggly bed at oh, six a.m. to go out into the blustering weather and shovel my way out of the driveway. Mind you I did not shovel a whole lot, but just wide enough to get a vehicle out of the drive. Half shoevlling the driveway may seem lazy, but hey, it works. Seeing me put on my boots, mittens, scarf, and hat, the dog, decided he would like to come out too. Why not? He'd be great company and he likely had to pee anyway, so my trusty, thirteen and a half year-old friend bounced out the door along with me. It was windy, extremely windy, and after about fifteen minutes of me shovelling, I noticed the dog pacing back and forth between me and the house, then after a little bit, he just stuck close to the house. I was guessing he'd had enought. Right-o. I let the dog back into the house, and thought to myself as I fought my way back out to the yard, that the saying is true: dogs are Man's Best Friend. My dog wanted in to cozy up with his "friend" who was still tucked, warmly away like Sleeping Beauty.Once I finished all the shovelling I was up for, I started the vehicle to let it warm. I scraped the windows, cleaned off the lights and license plate, and the popped the hood to clean off around the wipers and air intake. That's when the trouble started. Since it was so windy the wipers were actually flapping up from the window. You would think that I, having seen this, would have had ample warning for what was about to happen. No. Not me.Thunk. As quick as you please the hood came off its feeble jack stand and crashed, none to lightly I might add, onto my head. It was a good thing it was so early in the morning, the wind was howling, and that nobody was around. I'm now sporting a lovely, new lump on my head for the holidays and will more than likely have a new nickname to go along with the lump. I'm guessing "Lumpy" should just about do it. The thing that worries me now and will continue to do so until Christmas morn, is if Santa happened to have heard me on Monday and the few choice expletives that spewed from my mouth, I'm quite sure that I am now, on the Naughty List and will find nothing for me, under my tree. Happy holidays everyone and watch your language.Upcoming Events for December:Billy Graham at the Glooscap Restaurant and Lounge on Sat.
